CHINA COMPETENCY
The People’s Republic of China has evolved into an economic and technological powerhouse, challenging the perceptions of the Western world. Beyond certain stereotypes, there often lacks a deeper understanding of Chinese culture, economy, or politics, even among decision-makers.
This Certificate Course aims to enhance oneโs China competence and provide the knowledge necessary for successful engagement with China. Knowledge about Chinese culture, politics, society, as well as science and technology. The focus is on the future and collaboration.
This course is offered in cooperation with the China Center of the TU Berlin.
Learning goals
Upon successful completion of the Certificate Course, participants will possess a distinct China competence. They will have gained a comparative perspective on work and research practices, and better prospects for a successful global career. Additionally, they will be prepared for future decisions in an international context.Content
This Certificate Course is composed of four courses and a concluding workshop. Upon participation in all courses and the workshop, participants will receive the TU Berlin Certificate of Professional Education for China Competency. The courses and the concluding workshop include:Course Philosophical Traditions, History, Society and Economy of China
- Emergence of Chinese Culture and Writing / Influence of the three traditions (Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism) to the present day
- Societal changes since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949
- Structure of the Chinese economy and its peculiarities
- Influences of the three traditions and dynastic periods on contemporary China
- Current societal challenges in China
- Latest plans and priorities of the Chinese economy
Course Technology, Digitalization, Innovation in China
- Challenges and Consequences of Digitalization in China, International Perceptions of Education and Innovation in China

Concluding workshop Intercultural Communication
- Interactive introduction to intercultural communication and social interaction
- Group work involving presentation and subsequent discussion of results
- Exchange in mixed groups with German and Chinese participants
- As a program culmination and to enhance exchange between participants, an optional group dinner will be offered after the workshop.
- The workshop raises awareness about one's sometimes unconscious (communication) behaviour and intercultural differences in verbal and nonverbal communication. Participants learn about cultural competency, factors influencing perception and the extent to which our perception can influence our communication behaviour.
The dates for the certificate course and the individual courses will be announced on request. It is possible to participate in individual courses of the certificate course. Each individual course concludes with a certificate of attendance after successful participation.
Target group
The Certificate Course is designed for researchers and entrepreneurs as preparation for successful interaction with Chinese partners.This course is recognized as Bildungszeit according to paragraph ยง 10 (5) of the Berliner Bildungszeitgesetz (BiZeitG).
Prerequisites
- Participants should have a strong interest in China and its historical, cultural, political, and economic developments, as well as in international relations, economics and technology
- Some prior knowledge of China's urbanization and environmental development is recommended for better understanding and analysis of the content. Participants should have a keen interest in international collaboration and cooperation, especially in the realm of global environmental issues
- Participants should be familiar with the basics of international cooperation in research and education. They should have a strong interest in the political and economic relationships between China and the West and an openness to intercultural collaboration and exchange

Concluding workshop Intercultural Communication will take place with the subsequent certificate awarding in person. This event is expected to be offered at TU Berlin premises.
Cooperation
This certificate course takes place in cooperation with the "Center for Cultural Studies on Science and Technology in China" at the TU Berlin. With the CCST, the TU Berlin offers interdisciplinary China-specific teaching and research and is also a China competence training center.
