The Master of Business Law European and International Energy Law is a unique MBL program that combines academic excellence with industry expertise. As a result of market liberalization and the increasing impact of climate change, the energy sector is changing rapidly. The energy transition and the need for decarbonization are impacting many different areas of law. Understanding the legal framework for the energy sector requires an understanding of the technical and economic fundamentals that underpin it.

Learning goals

Our specialized MBL energy program introduces the key principles of energy market liberalization while assessing the legal developments arising from the decarbonization of the energy sector and the rapid growth of renewable energy. We provide lawyers*, economists, engineers*, and other professionals with an excellent understanding of the complexities and interconnections of the energy sector, with a particular focus on the legal frameworks that underlie it.

Content

  • European regulatory framework: from upstream generation to energy supply to households and businesses, including transmission and distribution
  • Assessment of the most important aspects of EU competition law and regulatory law
  • Technical and economic foundations of energy and network regulation
  • International law such as investment and trade law, climate law
  • Energy regulation in other energy markets such as Norway, Russia and the United States

The master's program extends over a period of two semesters, over six modules in the course of the academic year. Numerous lectures, tutorials and regular excursions (e.g. EEX in Leipzig, AURUBIS in Hamburg, Vattenfall in Berlin).

Prerequisites

  • University degree recognized by German universities (at least 240 ECTS)
  • Proof of work experience of at least one year (preferably in the relevant working Areas of energy) after the completion of the studies
  • English language at Level B2 (or higher)

The application deadline is April 30th of each year for a start in October of the same year.
